The Association of African Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM) will use the Automotive Show at IATF in Durban this year to advance the development of regional manufacturing  chains to address systemic unemployment and poverty in Africa.

AAAM CEO Dave Coffey said countries with successful automotive industries benefit from the significant economic contribution that the industry provides.

“With the motorisation rate in Africa, at a fifth of the world average, a huge opportunity exists on our continent. Where countries have the political will, an automotive ecosystem can be created that facilitates vehicle demand, whilst attracting global manufacturing as well as supply chain and service investments, along with the development initiatives to enable their competitiveness. The AAAM Automotive Forum at the Automotive Show at IATF, will unpack why the Pan African Auto Pact can become a reality if regional economies collaborate by diversifying, enabling scale and competitive growth within the AFCFTA amidst a changing technological landscape,” Coffey said.

The Automotive show, including an exhibition and the AAAM Forum is Africa’s premier connection point for buyers, sellers, policy makers and development agencies to meet and build partnerships around materialising a locally driven industry.

In 2021, IATF’s theme will focus on the newly-launched African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) – a single market for goods and services across 55 countries, aimed at boosting trade and investment.

The decision to grow the automotive sales focus and to promote automotive manufacturing at IATF strengthens the value proposition for all participants and places a dedicated spotlight on the automotive sector, which now has its own seminar and exhibition hall at IATF – placing automotive manufacturing at the forefront of thinking pertaining to African trade and industrialisation.

Automotive Show organiser Andrew Binning believes there is a powerful value-proposition for role-players across the globe to participate in the automotive show “as it showcases opportunity not only in the trade of vehicles and parts but also in automotive and component manufacturing on the continent.”

“Further opportunities will be unlocked through the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, which is in the process of creating a single marketplace across the continent. This development is a massive incentive to local auto manufacturing,”  he said.

Organised by Afreximbank in collaboration with the AU, the second IATF will be hosted by the Government of South Africa and is scheduled to take place in November 2021 in Durban.
